New SAR Initiatives Guide
The New SAR Initiatives Fund (NIF), was established by the federal government
in 1988, and is managed by the National Search and Rescue Secretariat
(NSS), on behalf of the Lead Minister for Search and Rescue.
NIF provides annual funding for new projects (or initiatives) that will
improve the NSP. NIF projects are funded in six categories: further integration
of the NSP; development of SAR data and information; prevention; research
and development; volunteers; and response. All of the proposals for these
projects are carefully reviewed and ranked in order of merit. The annual
funding for these projects is then distributed in that order. The latest
version of the NIF Guide is now available electronically.
The Prevention Working Group has an important role in the development
of prevention projects. The Working Group does not select the prevention
projects, as that is the responsibility of the NIF Merit Board, but they
do provide a forum of discussion and information sharing to those who
would like to develop prevention projects. The Prevention Working Group
would like to see prevention projects incorporate the S.M.A.R.T principle
and the best practice elements in the design, delivery and success of
prevention projects.
