Aubin, Mario Arctic Survival
Mr. Aubin is Chief Instructor at the Nunavik Arctic Survival Training Center. For twenty-six years, he served in the Canadian Forces training senior Canadian Forces and RCMP officials in Arctic survival. He has led over 250 Arctic expeditions and SAR missions.

Auger, Claude The Canadian Table-top Exercise Program
National Project Officer in the area of Public Security, Mr. Auger has been employed by Parks Canada, at the organizational level, since 1992. His first years with the Agency were spent developing programs in the areas of public safety and environmental emergency in the Saguenay - St. Lawrence Marine Park, in Quebec. Since his appointment to the National Office in 2002, his work focuses on developing and improving Parks Canada's emergency procedures while establishing and nurturing excellent working relations with the Agency's partners.

Avery, Brian PFD Study
Mr. Avery was born in an isolated community in Newfoundland and Labrador and spent his adolescent years fishing with his father. He joined the Canadian Coast Guard in 1984 and worked on several Coast Guard vessels and since 1996, has worked for the Office of Boating Safety where he is now Superintendent. With his rich history of working in the marine environment, he understands the importance of increasing the national PFD wear-rate.

Bannach, Jacqui Ground SAR Information System
Ms. Bannach is a senior policy analyst with the National Contract Policing Branch, RCMP. She worked as a Cadet Instructor teaching survival skills in the North for several years before joining the Canadian Armed Forces. Commissioned as a Military Police Officer, Jacqui served in Edmonton and Ottawa in both police and intelligence capacities, retiring in 1997. After several years in private industry, she joined the RCMP as a Civilian Member in 2000.

Bindon, Sgt. Don Police/Volunteer Relationship in SAR - Making it Work
Sgt. Bindon joined the RCMP 34 years ago in Edmonton, Alta. In 1996, Don was asked to take over as the RCMP Emergency Planner for British Columbia, a duty he still holds today. His responsibilities include the preparation of police for response to all natural disasters. He is the RCMP SAR Coordinator and manages the RCMP Emergency Operations Centre at Headquarters. He is also the liaison between the RCMP and municipal, provincial and federal governments and private industry.

Bouchard, Tina Volunteer Recognition Programs
Ms. Bouchard is Acting Chief, Communications Services at the National Search and Rescue Secretariat, where she manages the Outstanding Search and Rescue Achievement Award and Certificate Program, SARSCENE workshop and other duties. She is a volunteer with the Ottawa/Outaouais search and rescue group, SAR Global 1.

Bowes-Lyon, Deborah Competency Profiles
Ms. Bowes-Lyon joined the Canadian Coast Guard in 1978. Her service included 12 months as Chief Officer of an offshore SAR cutter and 18 months as Commanding Officer of an inshore SAR cutter. In January 2002, she assumed the duties of Superintendent of SAR Training and Environmental Response at the Canadian Coast Guard College.

Brewer, Neil SAR Business Planning
Mr. Brewer has been an active volunteer with Kent Harrison Search and Rescue (www.khsar.com) for 13 years and became a search manager in 1993. He has been heavily involved with the BC Search and Rescue Advisory Committee for the past two and a half years. Mr. Brewer recently accepted the position of Vice Chair.

Byers, Barbara Getting into the Pockets of your Target Group
Barbara Byers is the Public Education Director for the Lifesaving Society, Canada's Lifeguarding Experts. She is responsible for developing the strategic and executional components for the Lifesaving Society's annual Water Smart campaign. Ms. Byers is the chair of the Canadian Safe Boating Council and of their Lifejacket/PFD Taskforce.

Campbell, Don National USAR and Emergency Public Communications
Mr. Campbell is a senior policy advisor in emergency management for the Office of Critical Infrastructure Protection and Emergency Preparedness. He has nearly 25 years of experience in crisis management, emergency planning, operations and policy development. His disaster response experience ranges from floods, forest fires, earthquakes and ice storms, to the aftermath of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 when Mr. Campbell led federal response efforts to support the 8,700 passengers from aircraft diverted to Halifax.

Carey, Fred G. RF Radio ELT and Cellular Signal Profiling
Mr. Carey has been employed for 23 years with Telus, working in Network/Radio Engineering. He is a SAR Rescue Diver and past member of various ground SAR teams. As a CASARA member, he is an Active Search Pilot and area air deputy for Pitt Meadows (CYPK) as well as Board Member of the Pacific Air Search and Rescue Association. Mr. Carey is an advocate of technology such as Automatic Position Reporting Systems, as well as radio frequency profiling which he used to conclude a year-long search for a crashed aircraft.

Chaloux, Maj. Lynne Working with the Media (.ppt)
Maj. Chaloux is the Deputy Director of Air Force Public Affairs in Ottawa. A member of the Canadian Forces since 1984 and working in Public Affairs for the past 11 years, she has been Wing Public Affairs Officer at 8 Wing Trenton, deputy head of Media Liaison at National Defence Headquarters, and senior Public Affairs Officer at 1 Canadian Air Division Headquarters. She also served on a 7-month NATO tour of duty in Bosnia.

Charlebois, S/Sgt. Tim Ground SAR Information System
S/Sgt. Charlebois joined the O.P.P. in 1980 and was involved in numerous searches as a member of the multi-faceted Emergency Response Team (ERT) since its creation in 1992. In 1997, S/Sgt. Charlebois was transferred to O.P.P. Headquarters as the Provincial ERT Coordinator with responsibility for the SAR program for the O.P.P. In 1998 he became a member of the Ground SAR Council of Canada, becoming Vice-Chairman in 2001. This year, he was named Chairman of the Ontario Search and Rescue Advisory Council, responsible for coordinating the SAR program for Ontario.

Cooper, Dr. Don Application of Search Theory to Land Search and Rescue (.pdf 231K)
Dr. Cooper serves as the Research and Development Manager for the National Association for Search and Rescue (NASAR), President of National Rescue Consultants, Inc., and Deputy Fire Chief with the City of Cuyahoga Falls Fire Department in Northeast Ohio. He developed the FUNSAR Basic Skills Project for NASAR and has taught search, rescue, survival and emergency response programs around the world. In 2002, Dr. Cooper was awarded NASAR's Hall Foss Award for significant contributions in SAR both nationally and internationally. He is the author of several books on SAR and survival.

Coulbeck, Sgt. Brad Interagency Cooperation
Stationed with the O.P.P. in Hearst, Ontario, Sgt. Coulbeck is the Emergency Response Team team leader and search coordinator for Cochrane District and James Bay Lowlands. He is also a SAR instructor with Ontario SAR Volunteer Association (OSARVA) and an instructor for the O.P.P. wilderness survival course.

Coultis, Danny Joint Rescue Coordination Centre Trenton
Mr. Coultis served on board various types of Coast Guard ships in Central and Arctic and Maritimes Regions. He went ashore in 1981 as a maritime co-ordinator at the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (JRCC) Halifax. He transferred to JRCC Trenton as a coordinator and has been the Supervisor, Maritime SAR for over 15 years.

Dafoe, Eric Lessons Learned from the Avalanche in Glacier National Park (.ppt)
Mr. Dafoe is a Senior Park Warden responsible for public safety in Mount Revelstoke and Glacier National Parks. Mr. Dafoe has been a park warden for 24 years and is a professional member of the Canadian Avalanche Association. On February 1, 2003, Mr. Dafoe acted as the Incident Commander for the avalanche rescue operation and was appointed the Parks Canada spokesperson for the event in the days that followed.

Deschênes, Marc Québec Collaboration Avalanche Project
Marc Deschênes is a native of Montréal, Québec now living in Nelson, B.C. since the late 1980s. He obtained a B.Sc. in Geological Eng. in Montréal (1984). He is a professional member of both the Association of Canadian Mountain Guides and the Canadian Avalanche Association and has been working as a Ski Guide and avalanche safety instructor and consultant since 1990.

Ede, Douglas Ice Safety on the Rideau Canal
Mr. Ede has been a career Firefighter with Kingston Fire and Rescue for 19 years, including five years as a Training Officer. He became an Ice/Water instructor in 1998 after being promoted to the training division and was a member of the NIF/SAR program committee from its inception to completion.

Finney, S/Sgt. Bryan Interoperability Summit (.ppt)
S/Sgt. Finney, a Senior Analyst at the National Search and Rescue Secretariat, has over 32 years RCMP experience in general duty, training instructor, audit and evaluation, financial controls, and staff relations. He has been awarded the RCMP Long Service Medal and the RCMP 125th Anniversary Medal.

Ford, R. Paul Weather on the Great Lakes
Mr. Ford is an applied research meteorologist. In his 21 years with the Meteorological Service of Canada, he has served in many capacities including operational weather forecaster, trainer, strategic planner, project manager and now researcher.

Frost, Jack Tired of Guessing? Toward Objective POD Estimation for Land SAR (.ppt)
Mr. Frost has been involved in SAR for more than 30 years and has had several articles and papers published on SAR. He was a principal author of the International Aeronautical and Maritime Search and Rescue (IAMSAR) Manual, now a global standard. Mr. Frost is employed by Potomac Management Group and is currently working with the US Coast Guard Office of Search and Rescue.

Gagnon, Caroline What we have learned - 10 Years of Pertinent Facts About Drownings in Canada 1991-2000 (.ppt)
Ms. Gagnon has been working for the Canadian Red Cross for over 14 years in injury prevention and management. She has coordinated projects related to water safety, boating, first aid and emergency preparedness and response. This included drowning research, development of training programs and promotional campaigns, and national plans for program implementation.

Gagnon, Marc Multi-jurisdictional Exercises
Marc Gagnon is a Search and Rescue Training Officer, with the Canadian Coast Guard, Central and Arctic Region. He has worked in the CCG for the past 15 years, with experience on primary SAR vessels, and has conducted four major multi-jurisdictional exercises. Mr. Gagnon began as a base instructor in Parry Sound and now teaches Advanced Level 2 First Aid, the SAR 1 Training Program and provides training to the CCG Auxiliary.

Garapick, Peter The Power of Partnerships in Boating Safety
Mr. Garapick is Superintendent of the Canadian Coast Guard (CCG), Central and Arctic Region, Office of Boating Safety, responsible for the region's recreational boating safety and regulatory programs. Mr. Garapick worked for four seasons in the CCG Inshore Rescue Boat Program in Mahone Bay, N.S. and joined the Federal Government in 1991. He was an instructor with the Canadian Yachting Association and crewed on the Bluenose II to EXPO 86 in Vancouver via the Panama Canal.

Gullick, John The Power of Partnerships in Boating Safety
Mr. Gullick has been the Deputy Executive Director of Canadian Power and Sail Squadrons for the past five years, and for the past two years, the Chairman of the Canadian Safe Boating Council. Mr. Gullick has been a member of over 35 volunteer boards and has held positions in social and health agencies in Canada and Eastern Europe. He is a graduate of the Ontario College of Art, Communications and Design and holds certificates in Fund Development, Volunteer Leadership Development and Hospital Management.

Hanna, Glenda Ph.D. YouthSafe Outdoors
Dr. Hanna is the creator and project manager of YouthSafe Outdoors. She has been studying, writing, teaching and speaking about risk management and legal liability in outdoor education for 25 years. Dr. Hanna is the author of two books and dozens of articles on the subject. As well, she has served as an expert witness in numerous legal cases involving schools and camps.

Hong, Rosemary What we have learned - 10 Years of Pertinent Facts About Drownings in Canada 1991-2000 (.ppt)
Ms. Hong has been working for the Canadian Red Cross for over 12 years in Disaster Services, First Aid and Water Safety Services, including Drowning Research. Research has been her main focus for the last four years, coordinating data collection, entry and analysis, up to the production and distribution of research reports.

Howe, Peter NIF - How to ace the perfect proposal (.ppt)
Currently the Director, Coordination, for the National SAR Secretariat, Mr. Howe received a degree in Engineering from the Royal Military College. He spent 33 years in the Canadian Forces as an air navigator and was a qualified Search Master and commanded the Canadian COSPAS-SARSAT mission control centre in Trenton, Ontario. After retiring from the military in 2001, he worked as the SAR representative for Transport Canada before moving to his current position at the NSS in February 2002.

Israelson, Clair Managing Avalanche Safety Issues
Over 30 years in avalanche safety operations, Mr. Israelson is the Executive Director of the Canadian Avalanche Association (CAA). He has been awarded the International Mountain Solidarity Award for life contributions to mountain safety and is an IFMGA mountain guide and a CAA professional member.

Jacklin, Sgt. Wayde Canine Training Standards
Sgt. Jacklin has been a member of the Ontario Provincial Police for 20 years. He has an extensive background in emergency response programs and served in the Sarnia area as a uniform officer and canine handler. Sgt. Jacklin was the canine training coordinator for three years in Gravenhurst and Orillia. In the spring of 2003, he became the Coordinator of the O.P.P canine program.

James, Len Risk Management
Mr. James is the General Manager of Wilderness Medical Associates, Canada. As well, he continues to work as a paramedic for the City of Hamilton. Mr. James has advised numerous adventure/tourism organizations on risk management and wilderness medical training; for example, Parks Canada, Outward Bound Canada and Yamnuska Mountain School.

Jones, Dr. Anthony U.K. SAR Structure and the Role of Volunteer Organizations (.ppt)
Dr. Jones started in mountain rescue in 1964 in South Africa. On coming to the U.K., he joined the Ogwen Valley Mountain Rescue Organisation in North Wales. He has been involved in over 875 search and rescue operations in a number of countries. He is Vice-Chairman of the Mountain Rescue Council and represents the council on the U.K. SAR Operators Group.

Keefe, Allan Cold Exposure Survival Prediction Tool
Mr. Keefe, a research technologist at Defence Research and Development Canada (DRDC) since 1987, received a B.Sc. in Kinesiology from the University of Waterloo, and an M.Sc. in Kinanthropology from the University of Ottawa. His work involves scientific and technical support to research modeling human performance and physiological response to environmental stressors, primarily focused on the continued development of the Cold Exposure Survival Model and target detection and marksmanship studies.

Kerr, Guy B.Sc., MBA, EM Ground Searches in Cities, Towns and Villages
Mr. Kerr is a retired Sergeant with the Calgary Police Service and was the Search and Rescue Specialist for B.C. Provincial Emergency Program for two years. He is now living in Cochrane where he is doing consulting work in the area of search and rescue, first aid and emergency management. He has presented both nationally and internationally and is a recipient of the 2001 NSS Certificate of Achievement.

Koester, Robert Developing an Alzheimer's Wandering Prevention Program
A Type I Incident Commander, Mr. Koester has over 20 years of experience in search and rescue. Since completing an M.Sc. in neuroscience, Mr. Koester has performed extensive research in SAR behavioural profiles.

LaBelle, Joseph SAR Team Online - Electronic GSAR Administrative Database (EGADS) (.ppt)
Mr. LaBelle is an application user of the Electronic GSAR Administrative Database and has been instrumental in its development as both a translator and a tester. Mr. LaBelle has been involved in GSAR since 1996 and is a Search Manager with Tri-County GSAR in Moncton. He has served as Secretary of NBGSARA during system development and is certified as a NASAR MLPI instructor.

Leduc, Linda Wandering Registry
A nurse by training, Ms. Leduc was the Director, Support Services and Education for the Alzheimer Society of Canada for ten years and helped establish the Wandering Registry. Ms. Leduc is currently an Alzheimer Care Consultant and the Coordinator for the Alzheimer Wandering Registry Enhancement Initiative.

Long, Chris SAR Leadership
Mr. Long has been the Washington State SAR Coordinator since 1992 and has served on the NASAR board of directors since 1996. Chris is also an Incident Command System instructor. He is a Lt. Col. (retired) US Army and with 22 years experience in command and operations in both conventional and special operations units.

Lukowski, Tom Detection of Crashed Aircraft using Synthetic Aperture Radar
A physical scientist for the Canada Centre for Remote Sensing, Natural Resources Canada, Mr. Lukowski has 18 years experience in synthetic aperture radar. He has completed a B. Eng. (Honours) at McMaster University and an M.Sc. in the Institute of Optics at the University of Rochester. His key qualifications include SAR
systems and exploitation.

Maddison, Drew Developing a Local, Municipal and Volunteer Search and Rescue Strategy
Mr. Maddison is a training and liaison officer for the Chatham-Kent SAR Volunteer Association (CKSARVA). During the day, he is a public
education officer with Emergency Management Ontario. Mr. Maddison is a graduate of the Royal Military College of Canada and a former officer and is the founder of CKSARVA.

Martini, Calvin SAR Team Online - Electronic GSAR Administrative Database (EGADS) (.ppt)
Mr. Martini is the application developer for SAR Team Online and has over 20 years experience in information systems. He has been involved in volunteer GSAR since 1994. Mr. Martini is a Search Manager with Tri-County GSAR in Moncton and is Chairman of the Board of Directors. He has been the Webmaster for NBGSARA since 1998.

Mawson, Randy Meteorological Service of Canada's Weather Briefing
Mr. Mawson is a twenty-nine year veteran with Environment Canada and began his career as a weather observer and briefer. He has had considerable experience in agricultural weather, contract management, client services, environmental remediation, aboriginal communities and water survey. Currently Mr. Mawson is working as an Outreach Officer for Environment Canada.

Min, Brian Arctic Survival
Mr. Min manages business and economic development for Nunavik Arctic Survival Training Center. Holding degrees from Cornell and Harvard, he has participated in expeditions across Nunavik and Nunavut.

Murphy, Brian Weather on the Great Lakes
Mr. Murphy is a meteorologist in Ontario Region of Meteorological Service of Canada. Over the past four years he has been doing applied research, specializing in heavy precipitation forecasting, lake-effect snow and severe weather prediction. Previously, he spent 16 years as an operational meteorologist serving in Gander, Nfld., Toronto and Thunder Bay, Ontario.

Newcomb, Paul Satellite-Based Flight Following and Two-way Messaging
Founder of OuterLink Corporation (formerly Newcomb Communications, Inc.), a developer of mobile satellite packet data systems for transport fleet management applications and aircraft tracking systems. Mr. Newcomb earned a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from Tufts University and a Masters of Science in Engineering Administration from Southern Methodist University.

Northmore, David Conducting SAR with Aboriginal and Inuit people of Canada
Multi-jurisdictional Exercises
Mr. Northmore began his career with the Canadian Coast Guard (CCG) in 1977 as a SAR deck hand. He has worked aboard CCG ships and primary SAR cutters at various locations in Central and Arctic Region. In 1991 Mr. Northmore left SAR to continue his career at Sarnia Traffic, now Marine Communications and Traffic Service Sarnia. In May 2002 he was seconded to SAR Programs as the Acting Auxiliary Coordinator.

Novalinga, Paulusi Arctic Survival
Mr. Novalinga is President of Nunavik Arctic Survival Training Center. Mr. Novalinga also serves as Mayor of Puvirnituq and as President of theNunavik Hunting, Fishing, and Trapping association. He is a Sergeant in the Canadian Rangers and an accomplished carver.

Olmstead, Paul Civil Emergency Response (CER) Course
Mr. Olmstead is a 24-year veteran of the Edmonton Police Service who has managed to incorporate full time SAR duties into his career as well as being an original member of the Alberta SAR Volunteer Association. He has been involved in training standards, course development and course delivery across Alberta and the Arctic to volunteer groups and agencies over the last 10 years.

Patterson, Anthony The Use of Simulation in Search & Rescue Training
Mr. Patterson is the Director of the Centre For Marine Simulation at Memorial University of Newfoundland. He is a graduate of the Canadian Coast Guard College and holds both a Coast Guard Command and Master Mariner's Certificate. He is the Chair of the Offshore Safety Research Consortium at Memorial University, Chair of the Simulator Instructor Training Workshop Group of the International Marine Simulator Forum and a member of the Company of Master Mariners of Canada.

Pelot, Dr. Ron Marine Risk Management
Dr. Pelot has been in industrial engineering at DalTech since 1994. His main interest is Operations Research applied to risk and resource analysis. A risk model of marine activities is under development for the SAR branch of the Canadian Coast Guard. Dr. Pelot was president from 1997 to 1999 of the Atlantic section of the Canadian Operational Research Society. He is a member of the Institute for Industrial Engineering.

Perkins, Fred Small Boat and Aircraft Accidents, Trends and Statistics
Mr. Perkins is the Director Marine Investigations at the Transportation Safety Board of Canada. Previously, he worked in the Canadian Coast Guard as a ship's officer on the east coast and the Great Lakes, in operational positions in Coast Guard Fleet Systems, as Manager Marine Search and Rescue and as Manager Fleet Systems.

Pinel, Insp. Pierre Against All Odds
Inspector Pinel has been with Sûreté du Québec for 23 years during which time he has had every opportunity to take part in most of the major operations, whether it be in law enforcement, search and rescue or emergency management. Today, he is head of the Bureau de la surveillance du territoire for the North Shore District and also acts as Emergency Measures Officer for this same area. The remoteness of some activities demands a concerted joint action of all partners involved in order for the organization to fulfill its mission.

Posluns, Howard Reduce the Search in Search and Rescue - New Beacon Technologies
Mr. Posluns is the Chief, Advanced Technology, of Transport Canada's Transportation Development Centre, Canada's multi-model R&D arm located in Montreal, Quebec. After graduating from Concordia, Mr. Posluns worked at Canadian General Electric and later with a consulting firm where he gained experience in engineering design, systems engineering, and project management. Since joining the public sector, Mr. Posluns has been promoting aviation R&D safety and security initiatives, including Flight Data Monitoring, safety sharing systems, satellite navigation, emergency beacon technologies and airport security.

Rarog, WO Mike The Kugluktuk Incident - Lessons from the High Arctic
Warrant Officer Rarog joined the military reserve in 1977 and served with the 2nd contingent of Canadian Peace Keepers to Former Yugoslavia in 1992. Between 1994 and 1998 WO Rarog worked in Bosnia and Rwanda as a civilian aid worker providing food, water, shelter, medevac and infrastructure restoration to front line communities. Since 1999 he has assisted 440 (T) Squadron (Yellowknife) build and deploy the unit's crash response and GSAR capabilities, responding to numerous emergency events throughout the arctic.

Rose, Bert SAR Pitseolak - The CASARA Role
Mr. Rose has lived in the arctic since the mid 1960s. Now retired, he's spent thirty-five years in education and training across the north. A private pilot since 1978, and active with Civil Air SAR Association (CASARA) since 1994, Mr. Rose has served as Director of CASARA Nunavut since 2000, and is very active in both preparation and searches for missing boats and aircraft.

Saunders, Paul Digital Mapping in SAR
Mr. Saunders has eight years experience in aviation SAR, as a search coordinator, SAR pilot and navigator. As well as a member of the Civil Air SAR Association (CASARA) Ontario Search Management Team and is the current provincial Training Officer for CASARA Ontario.

Savary, Everett Tracking Using Angles and Light
Mr. Savary has 25 years of ground search and rescue experience and is past president of the Nova Scotia Ground Search and Rescue Association.

Sawyer, Capt. Steve A Systems Approach to SAR - SAR Happens with Everything Else Fails
Capt. Sawyer is the Chief of the Office of Search and Rescue at Coast Guard Headquarters in Washington, DC, where he is responsible for SAR policy, plans, programs and directions, as well as international liaisons and agreements. Capt. Sawyer has served in the Coast Guard for 25 years, including assignments as Group Commander, Deputy Group Commander, and Group Operations Officer.

Schwartz, Jo-Ann National USAR and Emergency Public Communications
Jo-Ann Schwartz, Director Public Affairs, Office of Critical Infrastructure Protection and Emergency Preparedness, holds a Masters degree in Communications Studies and has 20 years experience in all aspects of public affairs across the private, non-profit/charity and public sectors. Mr. Signoretti has four years experience in aviation SAR as a Chief Navigator and a member of the Civil Air SAR Association Ontario Search Management Team. Prior to this, Mr. Signoretti worked for five years as an Ontario Paramedic One where he acquired experience in Incident Command System and has worked as an Incident Commander.

Smith, Carole Ground SAR Information System
As Chief of Non-Federal SAR Programs with the National Search and Rescue Secretariat, Ms. Smith has the privilege of working with provincial and territorial SAR agencies and volunteer organizations across Canada. She is also a Civil Air SAR Association volunteer, with experience in operations, search coordination, training, and administration. She joined the Secretariat in March 2003 and has 10 years service with the federal government in environmental management.

Smith, Richard SAR Skills
Mr. Smith of the Emergency Response Institute Canada, has over 30 years in ground search and rescue and emergency and disaster management. He was involved in search and rescue in the RCMP for 25 years, and is a practitioner with the Clearwater County Public Safety and Clearwater Emergency Management Agency. Mr. Smith is a member of both Rocky Mountain House Volunteer Search and Rescue and Nordegg Volunteer Fire, Rescue, and EMS. He teaches extensively and has received numerous awards.

Smith, Maj. Roger Joint Rescue Coordination Centre Trenton
Maj. Smith joined the Canadian Forces in March 1985. Over the past 18 years, he has been posted to Squadrons in Shearweater, Gander and Trenton where he flew Sea Kings. In 2002, Maj. Smith was posted to 8 Wing as the Officer in Charge of the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre and SARSAT Canadian Mission Control Centre.

Snow, Gordie Survival in the Wilderness
Mr. Snow became involved in SAR in 1956 and joined the RCMP in 1957. In his 35 years there, he participated in over 200 actual searches and supervised over 50 searches. Since retiring, he has founded and is the CEO of Search & Rescue Services, teaches several SAR related topics throughout Eastern North America has written a book Safe and Sound on survival in the wilderness.

In 1990, Mr. Strong, the C.E.O. of the Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary (CCGA), received the Canadian Coast Guard Commissioner's Commendation and in 1998 he was presented with the Outstanding SAR Achievement award. Mr. Strong has been awarded both the National Transportation Week Award of Excellence and the CCGA Exemplary Service Medal. In August 2003, Mr. Strong was appointed to the Order of Canada.

Mr. Thomas is an 18-year veteran of Toronto Fire Services, serving as a Captain of Special Operations. He is currently the Manager of the Heavy Urban Search and Rescue Team. His technical expertise includes EMS, Technical Rescue, Program Design, Adult Education, and Instructor Development. He has 18 years experience as a Reservist in the Canadian Forces and was a licensed Rotary Wing AME.

A Senior Planning Officer at the NSS, Ms. Thomas is responsible for the management of the $8.1M New SAR Initiatives Fund (NIF), and the preparation of plans and reports on the NSS and the National SAR Program for Parliament and central agencies. She joined the NSS in January 1996.

Tikuisis, Dr. Peter Cold Exposure Survival Prediction Tool
Dr. Tikuisis, a defence scientist at Defence Research and Development Canada-Toronto since 1975, holds a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Toronto. His research involves developing mathematical models of human physiological responses to environmental stressors. Dr. Tikuisis has developed a prediction model of survival time for cold exposure, and he was involved in developing the new windchill index with Environment Canada.

Commodore Tucker is the former National Commodore of the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary. He is a registered Professional Engineer and Land Surveyer. Commodore Tucker served 30 years in various command and staff positions in the US Army Corps of Engineers, both overseas and in the U.S. He is a graduate of the Air War College.

Mr. Ventham served in the British army, first at Sandhurst as a cadet, then an officer in the Royal Artillery. He has worked for the Royal National Lifeboat Institution since 1990 as Head of Fundraising and Marketing and, since 2001, as Corporate Services Director responsible for the Institution's training, services, governance and international affairs. She graduated from the University of Waterloo with an Honours degree in Recreation and Leisure Studies. She is the General Manager/Operations of SAR Global 1, a volunteer Ground SAR group that operates in the Ottawa/Outaouais region.

Sgt. Webster has been a police officer for 23 years and has worked as a member of the Ontario Provincial Police Tactical Rescue Unit and the Central Region Emergency Response Team (ERT) for a combined period of 14 years. As the Central Region ERT Coordinator from 1996 to 2003, he acted as the operational search manager for several successful high profile missing person searches. Currently, Sgt. Webster performs the duties of the Provincial SAR Coordinator, which includes strengthening O.P.P. partnerships with the National Search and Rescue Secretariat, the Ontario Search & Rescue Volunteer Association, the Civil Air Search & Rescue Association and the Alzheimer Society of Ontario and Canada.
