SARSCENE 2003, Kingston Ontario October 15-18 SAR Demonstrations

The SARSCENE demonstrations showcased search and rescue resources in action on Kingston's waterfront.

The OPP Mobile Command Unit was the coordination centre for the SAR Games, and was on display for the remainder of SARSCENE.

Golden Helmets ride at SARSCENE
The OPP's Golden Helmets, a precision motorcyle team, performed in the early afternoon of Saturday, October 18. The performance was open to the public.

The O.P.P. team was first formed in 1963 and is comprised of officers on regular patrol duties from southern Ontario detachments.

The 20 member team consists of 16 riders, the Ride Master, a commissioned rider, a commentator and a motorcycle technician from Transport and Supply. Each team member must have successfully completed a three-week motorcycle course and at least one season on motorcycle patrol.

The motorcycles used by the Golden Helmets are Harley Davidson Police Specials. During each 30-minute performance, the riders take their machines through a series of complex patterns, which are intended to demonstrate the manoeuvrability of the machines and the riders' skills.

Other demonstrations from organizations such as:

  • OPP Easter Region SAVE (snow machine, ATV and vessel) Unit coordinated a joint marine/air scenario with the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre, Trenton, and the Canadian Coast Guard
  • Kingston Police Services, along with the OPP Eastern Region Tactics and Rescue Unit coordinated a rope rescue demonstration where a victim has fallen to a simulated ledge and needs to be rescued and treated for spinal cord injuries
  • Heavy urban search and rescue (HUSAR), highlighted techniques for lifting concrete slabs, searching through collapsed floors and ceilings by Toronto HUSAR and the OPP Provincial Emergency Response Team
  • From 10am until 5pm, there was a display of typical HUSAR equipment,
  • A combined marine and air demonstration organized by the Canadian Coast Guard and Canadian Forces, and
  • A static display of a Zodiac and rescue specialist medical equipment at the Ambassador Hotel.
